About UPPMAX

UPPMAX is a center for high-performance computing (HPC) hosted by the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University, founded in 2003.

UPPMAX is one of the six centers in the national metacenter Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC). UPPMAX is funded by the Faculty and by SNIC.

2003-03-27 Press release at the birth of UPPMAX (in Swedish).

UPPMAX provides a common environment for the regional community of experts in the fields of applied computational sciences (e.g., Computational Physics, Computational Chemistry, Computational Geophysics, and Bioinformatics), and algorithm development/computer science (Scientific Computing, Visualization, and Computer Architecture). Also, the center hosts a collaborative effort on HPC education and an important role is to pave the way for researchers in new computational science fields.

Objectives of UPPMAX

  • Ensure that local research groups can work at the international forefront by providing and simplifying the use of adequate high-performance computing resources.
  • Participate as an active node in the national metacenter SNIC, and build links to international centers for computing and networking.
  • Enable transfer of competence in HPC. UPPMAX will be a focal point for parallel algorithm and software development, and a center for advanced undergraduate and graduate education in HPC.
  • Provide important facilities for other current and future efforts at Uppsala University.

An important aspect of UPPMAX is to provide the necessary infrastructure, in terms of human resources and competence, for efficient use of modern HPC techniques and transfer of competence to new areas and between existing HPC users. UPPMAX also aims at providing appropriate local computational resources, both for computational science computations, and algorithm and code development.
