Bioinformatics
The sequencing of the human genome was the beginning of a new era in the life sciences, an era characterized by an enormous increase in the amounts of data produced. New high throughput techniques have emerged, capable of generating data at a rate that was unthinkable only a few years ago.
Bioinformatics is the application of information technology, statistics, and computer science biology to biological problems, and as data amounts increase, so has the demands on bioinformatics. At UPPMAX, the application experts are available to inform and assist about how bioinformatics can be carried out on large scale, to provide advice for how to attack complex questions, and to help users to get started using high performance computers within a biological setting.
The UPPNEX project is a subproject of UPPMAX dedicated mainly to analysis and storage of data from Next Generation technologies (such as SOLID and Solexa). UPPNEX projects run on the Kalkyl cluster.
Pharmaceutical Bioinformatics
The field of pharmaceutical bioinformatics deals with the part of bioinformatics which is targetted towards drug discovery, design, and development. Using HPC resources, it is possible to screen large virtual compound libraries, develop large computational models, and enable computations which are infeasible on personal computers.
