Applying for a SIMPLER project
The SIMPLER infrastructure now offers resources on the SNIC SENS platform, Bianca, for users who have been granted access to SIMPLER data. This page contains instructions to approved SIMPLER users for gaining access to their data on the analysis platform.
Some background: This page is only for SIMPLER users, see this page for more information about the SIMPLER project: http://www.simpler4health.se/. The application procedure for compute and storage on Bianca relies on the SUPR portal, located at https://supr.snic.se. This portal allows Swedish researchers to apply for resources in SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing). Resources are made available through various rounds for proposals, and one such round is dedicated to SIMPLER. The Bianca system is operated by UPPMAX, a center for high-performance computing at Uppsala University.
Support: Problems with SUPR itself should be directed at email@example.com, problems with the Bianca system should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org, and issues with the data itself should be sent to email@example.com.
A SIMPLER project includes both compute (Bianca) resources and storage (Castor) resources. Storage resources are divided between Castor /proj, which is backed up, and Castor /proj/nobackup, which is not backed up. Default values are provided when you create a proposal, but we encourage you to evaluate your actual needs when you apply. It is possible to adjust an allocation even after it has been granted, so just make your best guess when requesting resources.
Submitting a SIMPLER proposal
- Estimate how much data you're expecting to need to store during the upcoming year, in GB.
- Figure out how much computation time you will need, in thousands of core-hours per month. A typical value is one (1) thousand core-hours per month.
- Go to SUPR. Log in.
- Go to the SIMPLER round. Create a new proposal.
- Complete the proposal and submit.
- Project Title should be the topic of your activity.
- Edit Basic Information.
- Abstract should summarise your research plan, and include a description of the data you are going to store. Show how you estimated your projected needs (in steps 1 & 2).
- Add co-investigators (if any).
- If someone other than the PI needs control over the project, assign a co-investigator the role of proxy.
- Adjust the resources requested in your proposal:
- Set the Requested Capacity for the Castor /proj resource to the amount of backed-up storage space you need.
- Set the Requested Capacity for the Castor /proj/nobackup resource to the amount of non-backed-up storage space you need.
- Add the Bianca resource and set the Requested Capacity to the thousands of core-hours/month you estimated. Use one (1) if you have no idea.
- Fill in the data management plan section, this should probably include at leat
- A brief timeplan for the data. Where will you move the data when/if you are done working on it at UPPMAX? When do you expect this to occur?
- Do you have a copy of the primary data (not derived from SIMPLER) stored elsewhere? While we takes steps to ensure the integrity and survival of your data, this is not a guarantee and we recommend taking a personal responsibility for your data.
- Submit the Proposal.
After the proposal is submitted, a member of SIMPLER staff will vet the proposal and hopefully approve it. A project is then created on the Bianca cluster, and you will be able to request an UPPMAX user account. Be aware that it takes some time for projects and accounts to propagate through the necessary mechanisms and show up in Bianca. The data you have requested for SIMPLER will be placed by SIMPLER staff in the special directory "dataset-simpler" which is located in, and unique to, your project.
